Ceremonial Opening of the Camilla-und-Georg-Jellinek-Center for Ethics
On October 6, the Camilla and Georg Jellinek Center for Ethics was officially opened. With this center, whose opening was attended by some 250 visitors from the university, other scientific institutions and the city's public, Heidelberg University reaffirmed its “commitment to shaping science not only successfully, but also responsibly,” said Prof. Dr. Frauke Melchior, Rector of Heidelberg University, in her opening speech.
The opening ceremony, consisting of two parts, the ceremony itself and the subsequent symposium, explored the theme of trust. Prof. Thomas W. Simpson (Oxford University) spoke at the ceremony about “The Highest Form That Civilization Can Reach: Exploring Trust and its Foundations.” This speech also marked the start of the symposium entitled “Why Trust Matters – and How it Fails. On Confidence in Individuals, Institutions, and Professions,” which took place in the afternoon.
